U-Theatre

In traditional Chinese opera, the character ""優"" (pronounced similarly to the letter ""U"") refers to a performer. Therefore, as performers, we are ""People of U"" (優人). We cultivate a state of ""undividedness"" (神)—a serene and selfless state of mind achieved only through intense focus. Hence, we are named U-Théâtre, meaning we are a group of performers who drum in our own tranquility. Founded in 1988 on Mount Laoquan in Muzha, Taipei, U-Théâtre was established by founder Liu Ruo-Yu, who carried forward the physical training methodologies of Polish theater master Jerzy Grotowski. Since 1993, Huang Chih-chun has served as our drumming master. Together, they established our core principle—""mastering meditation before learning to drum""—shaping our foundational training and performance style. Guided by the ethos of drumming in one's own tranquility, U-Théâtre stays attuned to the changing times and the aspirations of the human heart, engaging with the world and moving forward alongside it through a stabilizing, comforting presence.
