Margins of the Industrial Landscape

Description

Changhua Roundhouse is home to Taiwan’s only continuously operating turntable, holding both heritage status and functional railway operations. It is a rare site where cultural and industrial landscapes converge, serving as an important repository of Taiwan’s railway memory.

Our micro-renovation project for the Roundhouse adopts two main strategies: spatial renovation and visual adjustment. Our aim is to reconstruct its appearance, allowing the heritage to coexist with the contemporary. We are using weathering steel as the primary material to reflect the Roundhouse's industrial character, giving the space a consistent ambiance through material expression and creating a clearer theme and greater unity for the overall environment. Meanwhile, we are implementing low-intervention improvements to the signage system, equipment layout, and color scheme to enhance visual appeal and user experience. By creating a guided tour route, we reclaim the spirit of this industrial landscape, allowing visitors to feel the deep-seated memories and pulses of this railway hub.
